Moving and living in Dubai

Dubai is the largest city within the Emirate of Dubai, offering international big city appeal, along with a cheaper cost of living compared to cities like New York or London. With a big move overseas, comes a lot of change. This adaptation includes everything from finding a job, place to live, and sorting out working or student visas. These six tips will help you make your transition from your life in the Great White North to the City of Gold.

Finding Work In Dubai

Many people enjoy working in Dubai, and particularly benefit from the lack of personal tax, so their take home income is much higher than in Canada. The work week is different in Dubai, with Friday being the weekly day of rest. Some companies even run from Sunday to Thursday, making their weekends Friday and Saturday. Generally, workdays are 8:30am to 5:30pm, but during the holy month of Ramadan working hours are shorter with six-hour days.

Like any move, it’s best to find work before entering the country since many new hires are recruited from international employment agencies. While most people in Dubai speak English, you may want to brush up on your Arabic, the official language of the UAE. Most Canadians can obtain a visa upon arrival, but it’s probably best to speak with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs office of Dubai to make sure all your paperwork is in order and you bring all the required documentation.

Pay Rent In Advance

Many employers are willing to help new recruits find a home in Dubai. If you end up renting a place, you can easily find both furnished and unfurnished options. The most expensive areas are the districts of Dubai Marina and Jumeirah, because they’re near the beach. Word to the wise, most landlords in Dubai will need six months up to a full year’s worth of rent before you move in, so make sure your bank account is ready to take the hit.

Adjusting to the Weather

Canadians are known for dealing with some pretty severe weather, which can happen in Dubai, only the extreme weather here lies at the other end of the temperature spectrum. Just like Canada, Dubai enjoys four seasons, although these seasons are a little less defined. In Dubai, instead of dealing with cold winters, you’ll experience long, scorching hot summers, ripe with humidity. Summers generally last around four months, but not to worry, Dubai has wonderful air conditioning just about everywhere, so you shouldn’t have to spent too much time outdoors if you don’t want to. For those looking for a little relief from the heat, consider visiting the mountain region of the east coast to cool down.

Making Friends Quickly

In addition to befriending locals, there are many easy ways to connect with other newcomers. Companies like InterNations help bring people together thanks to their complimentary membership with online and in person planned activities. Another way to connect is by looking for Facebook groups to help introduce you to others who can befriend you and give you some inside scoops on common questions like arranging childcare, the best schools, places to buy food, get coffee, and more.

Be Friendly

While Canadians are known for being friendly and adaptable it’s always a good idea to read up on the culture in the area where you’ll be visiting or living. Dubai is a Muslim city and their customs in public places reflect this. When out in public remember to dress modestly, keep PDAs to a minimum (like kissing or hugging), and don’t get intoxicated or disorderly, to avoid a run in with the local police.

Other ‘Canadian’ Comforts

Comforts from home are increasing in Dubai thanks to globalization. While Tim Hortons coffee is new on the scene, there are 15 locations to get your double double and Timbits, with some stores open 24 hours a day. Canadian brunch and breakfast giant Eggspectation has made the leap across the pond, with one of the favourite locations in Dubai hosting a beach view over eggs benny. Just make sure you get there early, because there is often a line-up.
Just because you’re living somewhere warmer doesn’t mean you need to abandon your skates. There are some hockey clubs that have formed, catering to children and adults alike. Canadians who enjoy hiking to keep healthy and explore can easily access trails, all within a two-hour drive of the city.

Why Are People Moving to Dubai and Saudi Arabia?

international moving - Orbit Moving

When it comes to international moving, more and more people are moving to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “What attracts people to these two countries in the Arabian Gulf?” you might be asking. “Aren’t they only known for deserts and oil?” While there’s quite a bit of sand in both countries, oil isn’t the only thing in Dubai or Saudi Arabia that’s enticing people to move there. Read on to learn why people are choosing to make their homes in Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

Dubai: The Transit Hub of the Gulf Peninsula

Dubai has become the transit hub of the Gulf Peninsula. Its national carrier, Air Emirates, is one of the world’s leading airlines. The Jebel Ali airport is the world’s ninth busiest. Once the logistics hub Dubai World Central is completed, it will be twice as large as the island of Hong Kong.

The emirate has leveraged its location (at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia) to become a transportation powerhouse. It is also very close to Abu Dhabi, another economic anchor of the Gulf Peninsula.

Saudi Arabia: More than Just Oil

Saudi Arabia has long been known for its vast, productive oil fields. However, as the rest of the world begins to wean itself from its oil dependency, the kingdom has begun to look at other sources of revenue to sustain itself. The Saudi Arabian government has recently invested in infrastructure, education and other projects. There will be a great need for foreigners to work on these assignments. Those factors make Saudi Arabia an attractive location for qualified candidates.

The Benefits of Living in Dubai and Saudi Arabia

Being an expatriate in Saudi Arabia and Dubai has its perks. Expats in these countries live in fairly tight-knit communities. And while it’s a small group, the expat community is quite diverse. You have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

Another advantage is the weather. If you come from a colder climate that’s prone to snowy winters,

Dubai and Saudi Arabia will seem like a paradise. The winter temperatures drop as low as 14 degrees Celsius, and although it rains in the Gulf during the winter, it’s still mostly sunny.

If you’re worried about learning the language, don’t be. You can definitely survive on English alone. And you don’t have to be concerned about missing your favourite brands – Dubai has a great shopping scene, so you’ll be able to buy many of the products you love.

Corporate Relocation – Moving Employees to Dubai

Corporate Relocation – Moving Employees to Dubai

Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It has long been an important port, and it is a cosmopolitan metropolis which is home to a strong business environment. Many companies have chosen to relocate their employees to Dubai to take advantage of the abundant economic opportunities that exist there. Read more about relocating to Dubai and how Orbit can help make this process smooth and successful.

The Advantages of Moving to Dubai

If you live in a climate where winters are harsh, the sunny warmth of Dubai is quite enticing. However, the weather isn’t the only reason to relocate to this bustling city. Unlike other places in the Arabian Gulf, Dubai does not rely on oil to power its economy. That means there are numerous business opportunities there, and many companies based outside of Dubai have established bases in this emirate. Dubai is a tax-free haven, making it an attractive place to set up shop.

Because Dubai attracts so many foreign companies, its expatriate population is very diverse. You will be able to meet people from almost all over the world. The language of business is English, so don’t worry about learning much Arabic. If you’re bringing your family, you’ll have a number of options for your children’s education in English.

Important Things to Know Before Moving to Dubai

Companies need to sponsor employees in order for them to work in Dubai. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs – Dubai handles visas for employees relocating to Dubai. Once employees obtain their visa, they will also need a health card, a residence card and a labour card. If you drive, you will need to transfer your driver’s license.

Employees will also need to open a bank account in Dubai. This involves submitting certain documents, including their passports with the residency stamp and a no objection certificate from their employer. The bank might also ask for a rental agreement and several passport-sized photographs of the person opening the account.

To obtain a telephone line or a cell phone, employees will need to supply their passport with residency stamp. In the case of a telephone line, they will need a rental agreement and a letter from their employer stating their salary details. For a cell phone, employees will also need to sign a yearly contract and pay an initial fee.

Getting internet access requires a similar process: employees need to show their passport with a residency stamp, and then fill out the requisite paperwork.

The Best International Moving Companies

There are many overseas moving companies who claim to be the best movers and best relocation company in Canada. Of course this cannot be true because then, all the international shipping companies would be the best. Finding a company experienced in shipping to Dubai from Canada can be difficult, so we advise you to research thoroughly.

To help determine which overseas moving company is right for you, Orbit International Moving Logistics Ltd has gathered some vital points for you to consider.

  1. The best tip – a recommendation from a friend.
  2. Research the overseas moving companies you are considering. Check if they are licensed to export and import.
  3. Make sure that you are performing an equal comparison between the quotes of the various companies. You compare international relocation rates from the overseas moving companies based on shipping an equal volume of goods and contracting the same exact shipping service on the same dates. Pay special attention to the “EXCLUDES” of each quote to insure that you are not overlooking any hidden fees.
  4. Check the overseas moving company’s referrals and reputation. Ask each company for testimonials from past clients. A reputable overseas moving company should have some for you to review.
  5. Visit the physical office of the overseas moving company you are considering. Never trust an international moving company without a physical address! In this day and age, anyone can have an office in their basement.
  6. Make sure that the overseas shipping company you choose has reputable overseas forwarding agents who can assist you in the same manner that you are getting from the company moving you from Canada.

5 More Reasons to Move to Dubai

In August, we published a blog post about five reasons to move to Dubai. We realized those weren’t enough – we’ve come up with five more.
In case you weren’t convinced by the first blog post, read on to discover five more reasons to move to the vibrant, modern-yet-steeped-in-tradition country of Dubai.

Reason 1: The Economy
Dubai’s economy has experienced steady growth that might not dazzle, but it is sustainable. The country’s leadership has chosen to diversify so Dubai isn’t so reliant upon oil.
This economic growth means there are jobs for highly qualified, trained professionals who can move Dubai’s economy further forward. And as we mentioned in the last blog post, you won’t pay taxes on your earnings.

Reason 2: Low Crime
Dubai ranks as one of the safest cities in the world. Its crime rate is the envy of other major cities thanks to strictly enforced laws and a well-respected police force.
Women can feel safe walking the streets at night – how many other cities in North America and around the world does that statement apply to?

Reason 3: A Tightknit Expatriate Community
Dubai attracts many workers from around the world (including from Canada). Because everyone is far from home and most expatriates don’t speak Arabic, a tightknit community has developed.
The expatriate community frequently runs events for newcomers and old timers alike, giving people a chance to get to know each other. It makes being in a new place (even one as nice as Dubai) less lonely.

Reason 4: Excellent Healthcare
Many people still operate under the (erroneous) assumption that the Middle East is backwards and old-fashioned. “I wouldn’t want to get sick there,” you’ll hear. “I wouldn’t trust the doctors or hospitals.”
That’s not true in Dubai. Thanks to government investment, highly trained doctors and nurses treat patients in state-of-the-art facilities. Many employers offer to pay for private health insurance so their employees get the best care.

Reason 5: High Quality Education for School-Aged Children
If you’ve got a family and your children are old enough to be in school, one of the biggest concerns about moving is their education. “How good are the schools?” parents fret. “Will our children be able to keep up with their peers when they come home?”
That’s not a worry you’ll have in Dubai. There are British and American-run private schools for international students that provide excellent education, no matter what class your child is in. As with health insurance, many employers will pay for your children’s education in order to attract the best employees.

5 Reasons to Move to Dubai

Are you considering a move to Dubai, the largest and most populous city in the United Arab Emirates? You’re not alone – many people move there for work.

What are some of the benefits of moving to this vibrant city-state? We’ve rounded up the top five reasons you should move to Dubai, and if you’re moving there already, this is what you have to look forward to.

Reason 1: The Weather
The weather in Dubai is amazing if you love soaking up the sun’s rays. Dubai has an average of 342 sunny days per year. And those sunny days are warm – the temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees Celsius.

If you’re from a colder climate, such as Canada, you finally have the chance to sit outside in December and not see a single snowflake. And because Dubai enjoys such fabulous weather, that means there’s plenty of things to do, which brings us to Reason 2…

Reason 2: Lots of Activities
Love the beach? Dubai has a long coastline with miles and miles of sand. Do you prefer your sand without water? Dubai’s desert makes a great place for a camping excursion.

If you’re not an outdoors person, don’t worry. There are plenty of things to do inside. Dubai has fantastic, moderately priced restaurants, lots of shopping, cinemas, ice rinks, and aquariums. Whatever you like to do, you can find it in Dubai.

Reason 3: No Taxes
Nothing in life is certain except for death and taxes… unless you’re in Dubai. The emirate is tax-free.
You don’t pay taxes on your salary. You don’t pay taxes on any purchases you make. That means there’s more money in your pocket at the end of the month. Expats who move to Dubai can amass quite a large amount of savings if they’re savvy.

Reason 4: Generous Salaries
One of the reasons people move to Dubai for work is because the salaries are higher than they would be in their home countries. Why wouldn’t you want to be paid more to work in a country with fantastic weather and lots of attractions?

And when you’re not paying taxes on a large salary, there’s more take-home pay. At the end of the day, you come out
ahead on the deal.

Reason 5: Just Because It’s in the Desert, Doesn’t Mean It’s in the Middle of Nowhere
When you think of Dubai, the first thing that comes to mind is, “It’s in a desert.” But that doesn’t mean it’s cut off from the rest of the world.
You can easily catch a flight to Europe or Asia from Dubai. If you’ve always wanted to see other parts of the world, now’s your chance!

Why Are People Moving to These Destinations?

People might undertake an international move for personal or professional reasons. In some cases, the moving destinations come as a complete surprise to their friends and family. “Why do you want to move there?” they ask. We’ve compiled a list of three destinations that might raise some eyebrows, until you learn what draws people to these countries.

Israel

In 2014 (the most recent recorded data), approximately 26,500 people immigrated to Israel. This group was made of people from diverse national backgrounds –from Ethiopia to countries of the former Soviet Union, to France and North America.

What draws them to Israel? Jews believe Israel is their historic homeland, and that by moving there, they are fulfilling their destiny as a people. For Jews coming from countries such as Ethiopia or those from the former Soviet Union, Israel represents a safe haven free from violence and anti-Semitism.

Jews from North America are in a different situation. They aren’t fleeing persecution. A large number of these people immigrate to Israel for ideological reasons. However, they are also drawn to the beauty of the country. In spite of its size, Israel’s landscapes are highly varied – the country is home to a desert, mountains, forests and beaches.

India

While many people emigrate from India, there are a surprising number of people moving to the subcontinent. What attracts them to India?

In fact, many of the people who choose to move to India are children of Indian expatriates. They are familiar with the cultures and the languages, and they believe that there is untapped opportunity in the country. Other people who aren’t of Indian origin move to India because they want to pursue dreams that might be more difficult in markets that have already been saturated.

India’s rapidly growing economy and cultural shifts have made it a haven for aspiring entrepreneurs. For immigrants coming from Western countries, the cost of living is also much lower than at home. They can afford to hire servants to help with cooking and cleaning, giving them more time to spend with their family.

Dubai

Twenty years ago, when people thought of Dubai, endless deserts came to mind. Now, the Gulf state is an economic powerhouse.

Dubai has attracted a great deal of foreign investment, and as a result, many foreign workers have flocked to the country. They don’t pay taxes on their earnings, and they find that they earn the same or higher salaries, yet the cost of living is lower.

There is a vibrant expatriate community that is involved in many activities, so you won’t feel as lonely or homesick when you move to Dubai.

Popular Spots for Expats Abroad

Popular Spots for Expats Abroad

Expatriates, or expats for short, are people who have chosen to live abroad for personal or professional reasons. You can find expats virtually everywhere in the world. However, some places are more popular for expats than others. Read on to learn where the most popular spots are for expats.

 The United Kingdom

One of the most popular global destinations for expats is the United Kingdom. There are a number of reasons people undergo an international move to the UK, including work and personal reasons.

When it comes to moving to the UK, most people’s ideal place to live is London. London is one of Europe’s (if not the world’s) centers for the financial industry and commercial sector. But the city isn’t all work and no play. London has been home to a vibrant arts and entertainment scene for centuries (The Globe Theater served as the stage for Shakespeare’s plays). So, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that London attracts so many people from all over the world – it has a huge population of expats.

 France

France is another destination that draws many expats. Again, there are many professional opportunities for expats, although many simply wish to experience the allure of the country.

Paris, like London, is a commercial center. If you speak French well, you have a much better chance of finding a job. People also move to Paris because of its historical and cultural reputation. While Paris might be the first place people think of in France, it isn’t the only place in France people move to, though. The French countryside also entices expats because of its beauty and desirable way of life.

 Dubai

Over the past decade or so, thousands of expats have flocked to the tiny Emirate of Dubai. Unlike the UK or France, people who move to Dubai from other countries come there for work. There are so many expats in Dubai that they actually outnumber native born Emiratis.

Jobs are only part of the reason so many expats have moved to Dubai. Many foreign white collar workers enjoy a significantly higher standard of living than they would at home – they live in beautiful homes or apartments, and many families can afford a full-time, live-in maid and gardener.

Because there are so many expats living in Dubai, it’s quite easy to meet people who speak your language and share your background. There are many opportunities to meet other expats, as they gather at clubs and social groups frequently. Don’t forget about the beautiful weather almost all year long and the kilometers of coastline!
