What to Pack When Moving to Australia for a Year

October 2nd, 2018

The Land Down Under is a beautiful, vibrant, country with a number of major cities. If you have the opportunity to spend even a year there, you should take it.

So, what do you pack if you’re going for a year? This list will help you figure out how to pack to maximize your enjoyment in Oz.

Where Are You Moving?

The clothes you should bring will depend on where you’re moving to in Australia. It’s a big country, and there is more than one climate.

Perth, located in the southwestern part of the country, is known for hot temperatures in summer. If you’re going to move to Sydney, on Australia’s east coast, be aware that summer temperatures are cooler. It’s also rainier there, so be sure to pack an umbrella.
Be aware that homes aren’t very well heated during Australia’s winter. While Australia’s winter temps never approach anything close to Canada’s frigid negative numbers, you’ll want a sweater to keep you warm.

What Not to Pack

In this case, it’s also helpful to know what not to pack. You don’t want to take too many clothes with you – if you’re only going to Australia for a year, you don’t need your whole wardrobe. And, as mentioned above, you won’t need your heavy winter gear.

Once you decide you’re traveling to Australia for a year, it’s time to go through your wardrobe and figure out what is absolutely essential and what should stay behind. If you haven’t worn it in six months, it’s not worth bringing. Another good question to ask is, “Can I see myself wearing this in the year I’m going to live in Australia?” If you have to invent scenarios in which you would wear an outfit, you shouldn’t bring it. There are very strict luggage limits for flights to Australia, too, which you can’t exceed.

It’s also important to be aware of Australia’s biosecurity laws. Australia has some of the toughest biosecurity laws on the planet. They have these laws in place to keep crops safe.

To that end, you can’t bring in live plants, fruits, seeds, nuts, or soil from outside of the country. If customs authorities discover that you have a forbidden item, it will be destroyed. Consult the Australian customs authority to get the complete list.
