When you think of moving, the first thing that comes to mind is packing. However, there are other things to consider.
One of those things is how much you should budget for your utility bill after you move. Read on to learn about the amount of money you’d need to budget for utilities at both your current address and your future address without wasting money.

Why Is Budgeting for Utilities Important?

Unless you’re not paying for utilities in either your current property, your new property or both properties, knowing how much you’re going to pay for electricity, water and other vital services is crucial.
Why is it so vital? The utilities company expects you to pay for the utilities you use in your current home. Once you move, you’ll have to start paying for utilities there, too. You don’t want to pay for utilities for both homes.

What You Need to Keep in Mind When Budgeting for Utilities

Utility companies typically charge customers for two things in addition to the utilities themselves: to connect your utilities and to turn off your utilities.

If you don’t disconnect your utilities after you move, you’ll continue to receive bills (even though you’re not living there and not using those utilities!). And, if you don’t pay to get your utilities connected after you move in, you won’t have access to electricity or water.
It’s also a good idea to keep the lights (and water and whatever other utilities you’ve got) turned on for one day after you’re scheduled to move. That way, if there’s a problem with your move and you’re stuck at your old place, the stay will be more pleasant – especially in seasons with extreme temperatures such as winter or summer.

Call your utility company and ask them how far in advance of your move you need to notify them of your move. If you’re moving to another country, this might be a bit more difficult. Instead, find an online forum for other expats who can walk you through the process.
Bear in mind that if you’re moving into a larger place, your electricity bill will be higher than it was previously. Also, some jurisdictions have more expensive electricity rates than others. Do a little research before you move so you won’t be hit by sticker shock when you get your first bill.
