5 Benefits of Hiring a Moving Company

boxes
When you’re preparing for a move, big or small, it’s best to sit down with your budget and a calendar and figure out how and when everything is going to get done. If you’re currently making a pros and cons list of the value of hiring a moving company, look no further. Your future self may thank you.

Get Organized

Moving isn’t just about relocation, it’s about setting yourself up for the best possible life as you settle in at your new destination. This means decluttering and figuring out both packing and storage solutions, a process professional moving companies are well-versed in. They can provide consultation, checklists, and connect you with their own network of other professionals to help keep your move organized and efficient. Years of expertise means that all your items will be carefully tracked and no steps or items will go missing.

Save Time

Experts in packing, moving, and shipping have all the right packing supplies, trucks, crates, and techniques to make your relocation as quick and painless as possible. When you rent a truck to move across the city, or across the continent, there are fuel and time costs as well as the time and effort put into making sure you have all the right supplies to get everything there in one piece. Sometimes breakable or sizeable objects will take up more room than expected, leading to lost time and additional costs. When you hire a professional, they’ll give you a cost estimate that will include various options, such as by boat, air, or truck (where applicable). This way you can focus on other details like obtaining a work permit, sorting out school registration, or deciding on what colour to paint your new living room.

Save Cash

We all know the cliché adage, time is money. But in the case of moving this is literally true. People will often do the moving themselves because they think it will be cheaper. When you factor in the hours it takes to get supplies, pack, plan logistics, and physically move, along with the cost of the time, you might not be saving anything. This is particularly important when moving items like furniture that may become damaged on the journey. With a professional moving company, you can rest assured they have the expertise to pack and handle items so they won’t break, and the insurance to pay for it should something suffer damage during the move.

Safety First

Movers know how to lift and manoeuvre just about anything, whether it’s heavy or just plain awkward, without getting hurt. People who move themselves are often addled with back pain, a sore knee or worse, making it more difficult to unpack and get settled into their new home. By hiring an experienced mover, you’ll know exactly where your heating pad is located, but you won’t need to use it.

Expertise

Think about your job, the hours and time it took to master your craft, whatever it is. In his famous book, Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell talks about the 10,000-hour rule – one that suggests that by deliberately practicing something for 20 hours a week, for 10 years you can become world class at your craft. Think about the experience that comes into play when it comes to planning the logistics of a move and the value of a company, like Orbit International Moving Logistics Ltd. It offers an array of services including local moving, long distance moving, international relocation, international moving, heavy equipment shipping, storage solutions, professional packing services, and specialized packing equipment, all carried out by a highly trained and skilled crew of moving professionals. Move anywhere. Tips, tricks, guides, and more for living around the world

globe-trotterVery few things are universal, but some solid tips from experts can help you move virtually anywhere around the world and make your life a lot easier. These tips can be applied for your move whether it’s another time-zone, country, or continent.

Move Light

Get rid of items you no longer need – donate to charity, give to friends, or even sell items to help fund the early, and often expensive days, of your move around the globe. Consider storing items you won’t need to take with you (like winter clothes if you are moving to a warm climate) or having friends and family who are visiting you bring a suitcase of offseason clothes when they visit. The less items you move, the less you’ll pay.

Organize Your Documents Like A Pro

Keep all your documents in one place so you can easily access them at any stage of your move. Make a photocopy of these documents and keep them with a reliable friend of family member back home so they can help you out should something go astray.

Research Your Phone Plan In Advanced

Try sorting out your phone plan before you leave because, trust us, your communication company will want to hold onto you as a paying customer if they can. You can enjoy uninterrupted service and often a fantastic deal as these companies often offer a discount to keep you as a loyal customer. If your phone company isn’t the best option you can cancel it, and often buy a short-term local phone card with pre-paid minutes while you figure out a local plan that works.

Don’t Get Locked Out Of Your Accounts

Make sure you have the correct phone numbers and email addresses connected to your social media accounts before you leave. Often if you log into a Gmail or Facebook account from a remote country it can set off a security alert. If you can’t verify your identity through the correct channels you may find yourself locked out and unable to communicate with family and friends.

Buyer Beware

Don’t sign a long-term rental for living accommodation without seeing the place in person, or at the very least have someone local, that you know and trust, complete an inspection for you to make sure that it’s somewhere you could commit happily for a long while. In the beginning a shorter-term rental, whether it’s an Airbnb, hostel, or the couch of a friend who lives in the country may be your best bet until you can verify the fit yourself.

Live Like A Local, Explore Like A Tourist

The internet is a fantastic place to find out about where you are moving, but guidebooks for tourists such as Frommers and Lonely Planet offer wonderful and specific advice on exploring ‘like a local’ to help you fit into your new home and enjoy some off the beaten path attractions.

Get Multi Functional Adaptors

Instead of buying a new laptop, phone, charger, hair dryer, or whatever else you’ll need to plug in, obtain a convertor that’s especially made for that country. There are even compact versions for sale which can make sure you can adapt without taking up a ton of room.

Stock Up On Products You Love From Home

When you’re feeling homesick comforts of home, whether it’s favourite spices, soaps, or candy bars can help bridge the gap. Bring some of these key items and don’t be afraid to have people back home send over care packs, including some of your favourite items.

Find The Right Mover

Research numerous moving companies and look for a company that is licensed and has a good reputation. Explore different options for transporting your goods to see which will work best for your timeline and budget. Depending on where you move your shipment could arrive by land (via truck or rail), sea freight, or air freight. Land shipment offers moderate pricing and speed, sea freight (aka container shipping) is the most affordable option, but also the slowest, while air freight is both the fastest and most expensive method of moving your gear.

7 Secrets to Feel at Home After Moving from the UK to Canada

feel like home

Since Canada and the UK have historical links that bind them, it’s no wonder that so many Brits end up in Canada, and vice versa. Following the vote for Britain to leave the European Union, Google searches for ‘moving to Canada’ skyrocketed. Whether you’re looking to leave for a job, family, or a change of pace, Canada can offer Brits a familiar yet brand new country to call home. Just the same, any move across the pond is a huge change, so here are 7 secrets to help you feel at home after moving to Canada from the UK.

Learn the Language

While English (and French) are the official languages of Canada, making for an easier transition, picking up on some of the nuances of Canadian language will help you understand what everyone is talking about in casual conversation, eh. Canadian spelling, unlike American, is very similar to UK English. However there are some notable differences, for example words like analyse and paralyse are spelled analyze and paralyze by most Canadians. Other terms to learn are mostly slang: a loonie is a dollar, a gas station is a petrol station, and a toque is a hat to keep you warm in the winter.

Enjoy Familiar Comforts Of Home

It turns out Canadians enjoy Coronation Street just as much as the Brits, with the CBC broadcasting it five times a week on the edge of prime time since it’s the most popular soap in both Canada and the UK. Feel free to binge watch and find out who in your social circle in Canada is also hooked on Coronation Street.

Learn to Love The National Sport

Ice hockey and lacrosse to Canadians are what cricket and football are to the Brits. A great way to meet new people is to go and check out some games, amateur or pro, and if you’re so inclined explore the possibility of learning the sport and playing yourself. There are numerous house leagues of various levels for adults and children alike. It’s a great way to stay active and meet new people.

Network With Other Brits

Groups like Brits in Toronto have over 4,000 members (with many cities across the country having such groups) and exist to help other Brits feel at home. These groups include meet ups, so you can connect with others who are going through something similar to you, but also provide opportunities for you to find the comforts of home in Canada. Need to know where to get a good curry or roast beef in your new hometown? No problem, members of these groups are happy to offer suggestions and help you acclimatize to your new life in Canada.

Be Wary of ‘Tourist’ Friendships

While it can be wonderful to meet other Brits new to Canada and figuring out if it is the right fit for them, and commiserating about your adventure, don’t rely on one person or family to be your entire social circle. Should they decide to head back home you will find yourself feeling very lonely. Karen Brooks moved to Whistler from the UK in 2010 and told The Guardian of her experience, saying that it’s easy to meet other expats where they live, but many people are only there for a short time, so remain patient when finding the best possible place to live, work, and meet others.

Bond Over Complaining About the Weather

Trade in your raincoat for a winter parka. Aside from the west coast in British Columbia, the rest of Canada sees a lot less rain, but colder temperatures. Invest in warm gear for cold weather so you can get out during the winter months instead of spending all your time inside, alone, watching Netflix. Want to start a conversation? Complaining about the weather is an important Canadian rite of passage.

Bring Family & Friends Over To Visit

Spending a little time in your new home as a tourist and enjoying attractions alongside loved ones is a fantastic way to grow an appreciation for Canada. Canada is huge compared to the UK, so even exploring one province, depending on the province’s size, could take some time. Scheduling visitors during your first years in Canada will give you something to look forward to, and provide new and exciting ways to explore the country.

Moving to Canada from California

Where to Find Celebrities After Moving from Canada to California
Sand, surf, sunshine, and stars. These are some of the many things that bring people to California. People moving from Canada may find themselves looking for some fun ways to fill up their free time as they get to know their way around their new home – and one fun way to do so is go looking for some celebrity sightings.
Here are eight places to go and seek out a glimpse of the rich and famous once you’ve moved to California.
It Starts at the Airport
While many celebs have private jets and hang out in VIP clubs before they fly, they’re stuck with the rest of us peasants at the baggage carousel. Whenever you’re at the airport, whether your travelling yourself or picking up visiting relatives, keep your eyes open for a famous flyer nearby. Arrivals are in terminal three, which is a good place to start looking.
Where to Get Fresh Fruit & Famous Photo Opps
While some celebs have staff, who complete their meal prep for them, there are others who prefer a more farm to table approach to their eating regimen. Studio City Farmers’ Market runs on Sunday morning and is standard for those who are working in the studios around the corner or live in the area. For regular celebrity style groceries consider scanning the aisles of Erewhon Organic Grocer & Cafe, a high-end health focused grocery store that has appeared on TV Shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Salons of the Stars
Just like everyone else celebs need some self and beauty care. Salons like The Chris McMillan Salon serve celebrities and regular folk (even though he is responsible for the legendary ‘Rachel’ haircut). Other salons where you may bump elbows with someone noteworthy include Jose Eber, Mêche Salon, Petit Mason, and Spoke and Weal.
Get Fit & Famous
Staying shape is key for celebs. Jake Gyllenhaal and Kim Kardashian are said to love interval training at Barry’s Bootcamp. Classes start around $30 each. Taylor Swift is said to enjoy classes at Ballet Bodies, Dakota Fanning at Cardio Barre Beverly Hills, and of course you may run into just about anyone at the famed SoulCycle Beverly Hills.
Some celebrities don’t like a traditional gym but want to stay in shape. That’s when they head out hiking. California trails like Runyon Canyon give a great view of LA and are frequented by celebs including Anne Hathaway, Channing Tatum, Alexander Skarsgard, Amanda Seyfried, and Natalie Portman.
Hey There Sports Fans
Some celebs are better known for their love of sports than others (ahem Drake). Head to the Staples Center to catch a game and a glimpse of celebs with regular courtside seats (like Jay Z, Leonardo DiCaprio, Dustin Hoffman, and many more).
Where to Dine, Drink & Stay
Celebs could hang out at just about any haunt, but some are more notorious for paparazzi and fan sightings. The Sunset Strip is a good place to start with places like Chateau Marmont Hotel, BOA Steakhouse, Sushi Park on Sunset Blvd., The Eveleigh, Fig and Olive, The Nice Guy, Augustine Wine Bar, The Magic Castle, or The Palm Beverly Hills.
Steeped Celebs
Celebs like coffee, like everyone else. California cafes known for frequent celeb clientele include Alfred Coffee (a fav of Harry Styles), or Urth Caffe (which served as a shooting location for the show Entourage). Aroma Coffee & Tea is a San Fernando Valley hang out for the young and famous as it’s close to Campbell Hall School.
A Sure Thing
Certain events guarantee celebrity attendance. Hang out by the TCL Chinese Theatre during a premiere to get a look at famous guests arriving. The same goes for when a new person gets a star unveiled or is going to attend their own Hand and Footprint Ceremony. Enter the lottery for red carpet bleacher seats, just be sure to register online in advance. Get set to be part of a live studio audience for shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live or Ellen, to get up and personal with the host and whomever is visiting.

Popular Spots for Expats Abroad

Popular Spots for Expats Abroad

Expatriates, or expats for short, are people who have chosen to live abroad for personal or professional reasons. You can find expats virtually everywhere in the world. However, some places are more popular for expats than others. Read on to learn where the most popular spots are for expats.

 The United Kingdom

One of the most popular global destinations for expats is the United Kingdom. There are a number of reasons people undergo an international move to the UK, including work and personal reasons.

When it comes to moving to the UK, most people’s ideal place to live is London. London is one of Europe’s (if not the world’s) centers for the financial industry and commercial sector. But the city isn’t all work and no play. London has been home to a vibrant arts and entertainment scene for centuries (The Globe Theater served as the stage for Shakespeare’s plays). So, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that London attracts so many people from all over the world – it has a huge population of expats.

 France

France is another destination that draws many expats. Again, there are many professional opportunities for expats, although many simply wish to experience the allure of the country.

Paris, like London, is a commercial center. If you speak French well, you have a much better chance of finding a job. People also move to Paris because of its historical and cultural reputation. While Paris might be the first place people think of in France, it isn’t the only place in France people move to, though. The French countryside also entices expats because of its beauty and desirable way of life.

 Dubai

Over the past decade or so, thousands of expats have flocked to the tiny Emirate of Dubai. Unlike the UK or France, people who move to Dubai from other countries come there for work. There are so many expats in Dubai that they actually outnumber native born Emiratis.

Jobs are only part of the reason so many expats have moved to Dubai. Many foreign white collar workers enjoy a significantly higher standard of living than they would at home – they live in beautiful homes or apartments, and many families can afford a full-time, live-in maid and gardener.

Because there are so many expats living in Dubai, it’s quite easy to meet people who speak your language and share your background. There are many opportunities to meet other expats, as they gather at clubs and social groups frequently. Don’t forget about the beautiful weather almost all year long and the kilometers of coastline!

Why Are People Moving to Dubai and Saudi Arabia?

international moving - Orbit Moving

When it comes to international moving, more and more people are moving to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “What attracts people to these two countries in the Arabian Gulf?” you might be asking. “Aren’t they only known for deserts and oil?” While there’s quite a bit of sand in both countries, oil isn’t the only thing in Dubai or Saudi Arabia that’s enticing people to move there. Read on to learn why people are choosing to make their homes in Saudi Arabia and Dubai.

Dubai: The Transit Hub of the Gulf Peninsula

Dubai has become the transit hub of the Gulf Peninsula. Its national carrier, Air Emirates, is one of the world’s leading airlines. The Jebel Ali airport is the world’s ninth busiest. Once the logistics hub Dubai World Central is completed, it will be twice as large as the island of Hong Kong.

The emirate has leveraged its location (at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and Asia) to become a transportation powerhouse. It is also very close to Abu Dhabi, another economic anchor of the Gulf Peninsula.

Saudi Arabia: More than Just Oil

Saudi Arabia has long been known for its vast, productive oil fields. However, as the rest of the world begins to wean itself from its oil dependency, the kingdom has begun to look at other sources of revenue to sustain itself. The Saudi Arabian government has recently invested in infrastructure, education and other projects. There will be a great need for foreigners to work on these assignments. Those factors make Saudi Arabia an attractive location for qualified candidates.

The Benefits of Living in Dubai and Saudi Arabia

Being an expatriate in Saudi Arabia and Dubai has its perks. Expats in these countries live in fairly tight-knit communities. And while it’s a small group, the expat community is quite diverse. You have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world.

Another advantage is the weather. If you come from a colder climate that’s prone to snowy winters,

Dubai and Saudi Arabia will seem like a paradise. The winter temperatures drop as low as 14 degrees Celsius, and although it rains in the Gulf during the winter, it’s still mostly sunny.

If you’re worried about learning the language, don’t be. You can definitely survive on English alone. And you don’t have to be concerned about missing your favourite brands – Dubai has a great shopping scene, so you’ll be able to buy many of the products you love.

Experience the Orbit Difference

Are you considering moving to Saudi Arabia or Dubai? Contact Orbit International Moving Logistics today at 416-661-4228. We have over a decade of experience moving customers all over the world, including to the Persian Gulf. What does that mean for you? We know how to get the job done right. Our staff is courteous, respectful and highly professional. Customer service is our top priority. Call us today to discover the Orbit difference – you’ll be glad you did.
